Will We See a Texas Rangers Rebound in 2025?

     It is an understatement to say that the Texas Rangers had a disappointing 2024 campaign. One year removed from their first World Series title, the team showed promise for the next year, with top prospects  Evan Carter and Wyatt Langford slated to play a full MLB season.

    Things didn't go according to plan, however, as injuries devastated the team, which finished under .500 and missed making the playoffs. 

    The Rangers have had a busy off-season thus far, extending contracts and signing free agents in the hopes of taking back the AL West division. The most notable additions include corner infielder Jake Burger, designated hitter Joc Pederson, relief pitcher Chris Martin, and a 3-year extension out of starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi.

    With the strong additions also come a few losses to the organization. These include all-star closer Kirby Yates, fellow relief pitcher Jose Leclerc, 3-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer, and first baseman Nathaniel Lowe. 

    We have seen that the Rangers have made themselves busy, and the team looks to be headed more or less in the correct direction. The lineup is still potent, featuring the dangerous Corey Seager along with strong bats in Marcus Semien, Josh Jung and Adolis Garcia. The rotation is also looking good, with Nathan Eovaldi and a healthy Jacob deGrom leading the way.

    I think the most important factor for a successful 2025 season will be Evan Carter. We have seen the potential he has in the 2023 postseason, when he set the record for most doubles hit in a single postseason.The success did not carry over to 2024 however, which saw Carter batting only .188 in 45 games before missing the rest of the year with a back injury. If Evan Carter has a healthy and productive 2025 season, he can be one of the league's better players.

    The same can be said for Wyatt Langford. The left fielder showed extreme talent in the minor leagues before meriting an Opening Day call-up. The rookie had his moments, but overall a lack-luster season which saw just 16 home runs in 134 games; not nearly what his minor league statistics suggested. Langford now has a year of experience under his belt, and so should be more comfortable with an everyday starting role for a competitive team.

    Other than the offense, which has seemed to take a step in the right direction this off-season, the Rangers need a strong starting rotation in order to find success. As previously mentioned, the headliners of this rotation are Jacob deGrom and Nathan Eovaldi, which form a formidable one-two punch, assuming they can both remain healthy. But besides the pair of aces, the team also sports Jon Gray, Tyler Mahle, and Cody Bradford, who all have found success at the major league level. Kumar Rocker is also an available option. Rocker had a brief 2024 campaign that showed that he can be a regular member of a five-man starting rotation.

    The final attribute for the team is the bullpen; and we have seen that this has been a problem for a while. They lost their closer, along with Jose Leclerc, who has experience in the closing role. General Manager Chris Young has responded to these losses by signing Chris Martin, Jacob Webb, and Hoby Milner as free agents. As of right now it looks as if Chris Martin will be closing the bulk of games in 2025.

    The Rangers have seemed to get stronger in the off-season. But so have the Astros and Mariners, who share divisions with Texas and will be competing for playoff spots. As of where it stands right now the Rangers are underdogs in the division. That doesn't mean it would be a miracle if they squeezed into the playoffs. They have a very real chance, but they must do everything right in order to take advantage of that chance. While it looks today as though the team will not make the postseason, we have learned from watching the game of baseball that truly, anything can happen.

     On one of my fantasy baseball teams this year, I drafted Riley Greene as my third outfielder. I considered my outfield staff pretty good, containing Mike Trout, Evan Carter, and Greene. Well, it seemed that two of the outfielders were quite a bit better than the third. It was then that I made the bold prediction that Riley Greene will bat .320 with 40 home runs, and not only carry my fantasy team, but also win the AL MVP award.       Though I was completely joking when I made this prediction, is it too far fetched? To put it bluntly, yes. Greene has been in the majors two seasons coming into 2024 and played 192 games in that span. The LOOGY

      I didn't know what a LOOGY was until a few months ago. It was then that I figured out that it was not phlegm, but an acronym.  Left-handed One  Out GuY      LOOGY. Pretty simple, right? Alas, the LOOGY has gone extinct due to overhunting and habitat loss from Rob Manfred. The semi-new rules state that when a pitcher comes into the game, he must face three batters or finish an inning. So unless your LOOGY comes in with two outs and  gets the batter out, then he no longer exists.      Anyway, LOOGYs were pretty cool and also quite useful for platoon advantage if you have a left-handed batter sandwiched amidst a bunch of righties, which I can imagine happened quite often. If you were in a big spot when said lefty came up to bat, the LOOGY was your man. But you wasted a reliever, especially if you were throwing Billy Wagner to get one out. Commentary on the Cy Young Awards

  The last award to come out that I am writing about is the Cy Young Award. I notice that this one is wrong a LOT of the time. Let's see if they were right on at least one of them, and, if there is a miracle, both of them. NL: Winner: Blake Snell Runner up: Logan Webb Third: Zac Gallen  Fourth: Spencer Strider Fifth: Justin Steele     Is this even a contest? The player in the top five with an ERA closest to Blake Snell's is off by a massive 81 points! This happens to be number five, Justin Steele, who had a 3.06 ERA in his breakout 2023 campaign. While there were a key things that the 2-5 choices had (Logan Webb leading the league in innings pitched and shutouts, Zac Gallen tied in shutouts, Spencer Strider leading in wins, and Justin Steele with the second lowest ERA in the top five and a .762 win percentage), it's not even close.
