What if...?

     This is the second post of my What if...? series, which I created back when I was experiencing really bad writer's block. Glad to report that that ship has sailed. Anyway, this one came about on a ride home from a baseball game during a friendly conversation.

    What if when a pitcher threw a pitch, he both tore his labrum and fractured his humerus? Well, this pitch ended up crossing the strike zone and the batter hit a line drive into the pitcher's already injured elbow.

    In case you didn't know, the labrum is an important part of the arm for a pitcher, and tearing it meant Tommy John surgery.  And a fracture of the humerus ends players' careers. So, two injuries that already ruin pitchers, and then a line drive straight to the arm? Not a good mix.

The LOOGY

      I didn't know what a LOOGY was until a few months ago. It was then that I figured out that it was not phlegm, but an acronym.  Left-handed One  Out GuY      LOOGY. Pretty simple, right? Alas, the LOOGY has gone extinct due to overhunting and habitat loss from Rob Manfred. The semi-new rules state that when a pitcher comes into the game, he must face three batters or finish an inning. So unless your LOOGY comes in with two outs and  gets the batter out, then he no longer exists.      Anyway, LOOGYs were pretty cool and also quite useful for platoon advantage if you have a left-handed batter sandwiched amidst a bunch of righties, which I can imagine happened quite often. If you were in a big spot when said lefty came up to bat, the LOOGY was your man. But you wasted a reliever, especially if you were throwing Billy Wagner to get one out. Commentary on the Cy Young Awards

  The last award to come out that I am writing about is the Cy Young Award. I notice that this one is wrong a LOT of the time. Let's see if they were right on at least one of them, and, if there is a miracle, both of them. NL: Winner: Blake Snell Runner up: Logan Webb Third: Zac Gallen  Fourth: Spencer Strider Fifth: Justin Steele     Is this even a contest? The player in the top five with an ERA closest to Blake Snell's is off by a massive 81 points! This happens to be number five, Justin Steele, who had a 3.06 ERA in his breakout 2023 campaign. While there were a key things that the 2-5 choices had (Logan Webb leading the league in innings pitched and shutouts, Zac Gallen tied in shutouts, Spencer Strider leading in wins, and Justin Steele with the second lowest ERA in the top five and a .762 win percentage), it's not even close. AL Rookie of the Year, 3B: Gunnar Henderson vs. Josh Jung

 All baseball season I thought that Josh Jung was easily going to win the rookie of the year award. Now I'm not so sure. While Josh Jung has been consistently great all season, Gunnar Henderson, on the other hand, started off the season terribly. Trust me. He was on my fantasy team. Nonetheless, he's shaped up a bit, and is now having an amazing season. Which one of these third basemen is more likely to win the Rookie of the Year Award? Let's see. Gunnar Henderson is slashing a nice .258/.328/.493 on the season with 27 homers, 98 runs and 81 RBIs in 145 games on the season. His home run rate is 4.5%, with the league average being 3%, and his strikeout rate is 25.4%, about 3% higher than the league average. Josh Jung is slashing .274/.320/.486 with 23 homers, 74 runs and 70 RBIs in 115 games this season.
