Opening Day is in 3 Days

Like said in the title of this post, Opening Day is in three days, the 28th. And Jordan Montgomery still doesn't have a team.

This is a nice little way to get the blog out of temporary retirement.

Jordan Montgomery is on both of my fantasy teams, and may spend the year in my NA slot if he doesn't find a job ASAP.

With the start of MLB's next season just around the corner, the top free-agent doesn't have a team. Montgomery was very good last year, posting a 10-11 record and 3.20 ERA with two teams, as well as a 3-1 record and 2.90 ERA in the postseason as he led the Rangers to their first ever World Series victory. It should have been beyond easy for him to sign a contract. However, with some misfortunate happenings, it became a lot more difficult for him to find a job.

Firstly, Montgomery's latest team, the Texas Rangers, is having monetary problems after Bally Sports went bankrupt. Now, multiple teams are down funds from their contracts with Bally Sports. This made it a big problem for the Rangers to re-sign Montgomery. At least he was offered free barbecue for life if he re-signed. I guess he's not a fan of brisket and barbecue sauce, as there is almost no chance that he returns to his former club.

However, one of Montgomery's former teams seems in the front-running for his contract. This team is the Yankees, which have offered Jordan a long-term deal. Other teams in the mix include the Diamondbacks and Phillies. I doubt that he will come to either of those teams though, because the Yankees were the first to offer him the long-term deal he's been sticking out for.

The second problem that arises for Montgomery is his agent, Scott Boras. Boras only wants him to sign a big fat long-term deal worth tons of money. Scott Boras is historically stubborn as an ox, and I can't really fathom why he still has a job. Blake Snell signed so late that he's pitching in minor league games in order to get work in before the season, and he too is a client of Scott Boras. Montgomery and Snell were two of the top three free agent starters, and they are the big names struggling to find work.

These two unfortunate mishaps (the bankruptcy of Bally Sports and Scott Boras) are losing J-Mont precious time to get spring training action, which may prove to be a costly mistake. He needs to sign, and he needs to sign now, or else he's in deep trouble with no clear way of getting out; except for lowering his asking price. As if multiple millions of dollars isn't enough money, Montgomery also wants a seven year contract. He should sign with the team that gives him the best offer now, and when that contract expires, then he can find another team if he wants to stay around for seven full seasons. I can almost guarantee that a team will want him. Even if finding work in the later years of his career is his worry, a team can still release a player if he's not performing up to standard. Either way, the southpaw needs to remain good, or at least decent, for the next seven seasons to ensure what he wants.

Well, there's my scoop on the Jordan Montgomery report. Please tell me in the comments what you think and what team he should sign with. Thank you for reading.

  1. Scott Boras still has a job because he gets lots of money for his players. Simple as that. Bally Sports went bankrupt? I had no idea.

I hope Monty returns to New York. Will he do so? No idea.

The Yankees trading him away was so dumb.
