Why Shohei Shouldn't win the MVP

Let's face it: Shohei Ohtani has an amazing career and is having quite possibly the best season of his career this season. However, I would personally give my MVP vote (if I were a sportswriter) to Corey Seager. And here's why.

Seager has been insane this season, smashing a league-leading 40 doubles and 31 homers in only 103 games, due to two injuries. He is slashing .344/.406/.663, with the batting average and slugging percentage leading the AL. As a shortstop! And though he has missed over 40 games with injuries, he should still be ahead of Ohtani.

Ohtani is slashing .304/.412/.654, with the OBP leading the league. He has mashed 44 homers thus far, and has pitched well this season, going 10-5 with a 3.14 ERA in 23 starts. It is hard to beat an elite hitter and pitcher in the MVP race. Nevertheless, there is one reason why he should not win the MVP award.

Ohtani tore his UCL and may need another Tommy John Surgery. Pitchers who have a second Tommy John tend to have a painful regression. Trust me. I have had two, and my minor league pitching career is over. Just kidding. I am a sophomore in high school who only pitches at about 60 MPH.

But anyway, the Angels claimed that they had told Ohtani to get an MRI scan on his hurt arm, but he refused. Then he only went 1 1/3 innings in his next start and is done for the year. Of course, this may just be the way to get the blame off the Angels. But, it seems that they don't want him to be the MVP if they condemn him, and if this is true, then he shouldn't be the MVP because he is letting his team down. How can you be the most valuable player is you let your team down?

Unfortunately, the injury may be a problem for Shohei's pitching career, and this is obviously a bigger deal than the MVP race. Let's hope for the best for Ohtani.

And believe me, I have nothing against the man. These are the reasons I think that Seager should be the MVP instead of Shohei. So please tell me what you think in the comments and thank you for reading.

  1. The 2023 AL MVP Award is given to the most valuable player in 2023. If Ohtani gets surgery and can't pitch, that will affect his MVP candidacy next year. In 2023, Ohtani has made 23 starts, pitching to a 3.14 ERA, 1.061 WHIP, and 31.5 K% in 132 innings. He's also slashed .304 / .412 / .654 with a league leading 44 homers... at a much more demanding position than shortstop (pitcher). Seager's been great when healthy, but he's missed 40 games and doesn't pitch.

Basically Ohtani's two MVP candidates put together. Each one may not win the award on his own, but when combined, he's an easy choice for the award.

  2. ^ Damien is totally correct. Ohtani is the obvious choice. Ohtani has been more valuable offensively - and light-years more valuable defensively.

    1. Of course I'm totally correct! That's kind of like my job description.
